Buyer's Guide: Best Tongue Cleaner

The Many Uses of a Tongue Cleaner

A tongue cleaner (often referred to as a tongue scraper or tongue scrubber) is an inexpensive oral health device designed primarily to scrape off the thin layer of skin on the tongue's surface. While there's some limited benefit to the use of such a tongue scraper it's not enough to draw firm conclusions about foul breath. The presence of bacteria on the back of your tongue isn't the only cause for offensive breath so the primary focus of this article is on methods for fighting offensive breath caused by other factors. We'll discuss specific types of odors, the roles played by saliva, mucous and phlegm, and other natural components that may be responsible for foul breath.

Many commercial tongue cleaners are made of plastic, vinyl, or metal and contain some variety of chemical compound that's intended to get rid of the coating the bacteria build up on the tongue's surface. These products can also work to help get rid of stains from stained clothing, or to help get rid of some types of hair. While their effectiveness varies, there are some products that do produce results.

Many tongue scrapers are marketed to individuals with halitosis or other bad breath issues caused by the presence of odor-causing bacteria on the back of the tongue or between the teeth. The scouring action of these devices can irritate the gums, cheeks and back of the throat. This is one reason they're typically used by individuals with oral infections, as oral infections present some of the most common reasons for someone to have a bad odor on their breath. While some of these products are less effective than others, many provide at least some relief for offensive breath. They do so by getting rid of the bacteria.

Tongue scrapers are typically used to clean out pockets or crevices where bacteria accumulate. They come in many different shapes, sizes and designs. Some can be pushed into grooves carved into the tongue or other areas. Others are shaped like long, flexible fingers that reach out into the mouth and scrape. Still others are simply long, thin strips of metal that run across the back of the tongue and scrape at the pockets and crevices.

Since it doesn't involve mouthwash or any type of chemicals, a tongue cleaner has the advantage over other oral hygiene tools for two primary reasons. First, it can't irritate the gums and mouth, which means it won't trigger symptoms of mouth inflammation or soreness. Second, it doesn't contribute to the buildup of plaque, which means brushing and flossing doesn't need to be done as often, and oral care gets more attention too.

Tongue scrapers are designed to reach far back on the tongue so they can scrape the inside of pockets and crevices. A far back cleaner usually comes with two distinct parts. One part is the rounded part at the base of the tool that pushes forward to scrape, and another rounded piece at the top. Scrapers can be divided further into two main types, the one with the curved base and the one without. Curved scrapers are designed for scraping far back, while razored ones are designed for scraping near the edges.

Some Tongue Cleaner products have a second function. If a gag reflex develops after the tongue cleaner has been used on a regular basis, some Tongue Cleaner manufacturers have developed tongue scrapers that have a small "sensitive" part just above the tip. This piece is activated when something triggers the gag reflex, and it allows the tongue cleaner to be used more effectively to keep the gag reflex from developing.

Tongue scrapers are available in many different styles. Some include a small sponge with an end that is designed to be pushed back to scrape, while others include a metal tongue scraper that has a very sharp edge for cutting through the gums and creases on tongues. Tongue scrapers are made from plastic and metal, and they can come with varying degrees of sensitivity. It is important that you test your Tongue Cleaner before you use it regularly, as if it doesn't work properly, you could easily cause more damage than you would ever realize.
